Merason Frérot

At the south-german

HiFi-days 2018 in Freiburg I met Dr. Daniel Frauchiger, the mastermind behind Merason.

He had already gathered a good reputation with the DAC1, a higher-prized DAC he commercialized a couple of years ago. Now he was going to let him follow a little brother, the Frérot. The Frérot made it´s appearance in 2020 and quickly gained some attention by its good looks, its qualities and its attractive price tag.

What´s my part in the game? Well, there´s a little bit of me inside ... and that is how it came:

Shortly after the Freiburg fair Daniel asked me to evaluate the circuit design of a voltage-to-current-converter plus output buffer. I liked the circuitry as such, discrete build, abandonment of global feedback loops and class-a biasing of the buffer stages. Still though the design didn´t match the PCM1794 DAC optimally and showed a couple of flaws that made a modification neccessary. A visit in Worb followed with loads of shoptalk and listening to my personal DAC/music server. Thereupon I made a proposal based on the very good experiences with simple feedback-less concepts of

I/V-conversion utilizing highly stable and precise resistors. The proposal appealed and first prototypes were developed. In the running of the design process I added a special DC-servo circuit and proposed a dc-dc-converter to generate the power rails. These subassemblies added to the final design by Daniel.

I´m very excited that the Frérot went off so well in the market and has already gotten a couple of very positive reviews. What´s noticeable is the general tenor of the reviewers:

-"Letting the listener dive deep into the music - that´s the central talent of the Mearson Frérot"

   (fairaudio)

-"The Merason Frérot keeps everything together - and as such fulfills it´s development target:

analog musicality in a digital world." (hifi&records)

-"Wonderfully lightweight, ´fast´ sound full of details." (lowbeats)

-"Musicality and a grasp of emotion and spatiality." (HiFi-IFAs)
