The BM867S and its bigger brother BM689S of the taiwanese manufacturer Brymen are highly precise multimeters with an resolution of 50.000 counts, that can even be expanded to 500.000 counts with a push on a button.
They are designed remarkably robust and Brymen is at the time the only manufacturer of DMMs that are specified CAT IV, 1000V. Regarding capabilities and size they aim towards the large Fluke 287 and 289, apart from the data-logging function and at considerably lower cost (150€/220€ against 450€/600€). With an actual price tag of 150€ the Brymen BM867S is a real bargain.
The enormous resolution allows us to measure smallest DC-Offsets or the voltages of thermocouple-elements at room temperature (e.g. type R=140µV@25°C).
Also the measuring speed is very high. You can detect very short pulses down to 1ms length on a line utilizing the Crest function and quantize the result with the Rec function.
Apart from the data-logging functionality the comparison of my new Brymen against the freshly calibrated Fluke 289 of my employer resulted in no relevant measurement differences.
The Bargraph of the Brymen is very fast also.
In everyday use the Brymen is clearly superior. The very large Dual display and the white background illumination allow for easy readout. With the big turning selector switch You quickly dial in on the wanted function and the six push buttons let You quickly and intuitively choose the sub-functions.
The Flukes on the other hand show rather small fonts on a low-contrast display combined with a rather dim illumination. While the menue structure is basically ok, the handling with 14 push buttons is obviously more complicated and time consuming, sometimes even a hassle. Try for example to set the continuity tester beeper. Until You manage to get the first beep from the Fluke, the Brymen has beeped probabely a 100 times already.
Regarding the mechanics one can´t complain. The casing is screwed together by o-ring sealed screws that sit in brass bushings. The battery compartment has a separate screw-on lid.
All in all it appears a very solid and robust device.
In contrast to its substantial size and weight the Brymen rests comfortably and safely in Your palm.
I like the shape of the casing as more ergonomical than the Fluke´s. The thick red rubber holster guarantees for mechanical protection and robustness. The german distributor Welectron (recommended!) even sent me the version with pouch and first class silicon probes.
Shortly after my purchase my employer also bought the BM867s and the smaller BM235 and BM231.
Since then the Fluke 289 and several Amprobe meters just cought dust in the cupboard.
