I was looking for a lowcost small handheld oscilloscope for mobile useage and service.
At the EEVblog forum one can find several threads discussing the numerous models available.
My personal specification list:
- budget ideally below 100€
- mobile, palm sized with clear well readable display
- 2-channels ... if the budget allowed for
- 10MHz+ Bandwidth ... sufficient for audio
- decent GUI ... modern devices shine or fall by their software
- ideally a touch screen plus buttons
- signal generator with 4-5 basic waveforms
The specs to the right are published on ZEEWEI´s website. Honestly, I don´t believe in the claimed bandwidth and precision values, but everything above 10MHz would suffice anyway. In praxis up to ~48MHz are possible in dual-channel mode. Just slightly higher and the traces become very jittery and rather useless. In single channel mode the bandwidth limit is even higher.
The colour display is clear and crisp with a high possible viewing angle. It is no touch diplay though.
The buttons react well to a press and a beep notifies the user of the action. 17 Buttons are a lot for such a small device, but still though it requires double action and submenues to setup and access and use all of the many possible functions. The buttons are grouped and coloured to allow for easy recognition. Just the whitish printing for the secondary button functions are had to recognize. I wished they were more prominent.
A short basic, but quite useable paper Manual in english is part of the package, and a pdf manual can be downloaded from their website.
The casing appears solid and very stiff. The blue rubber holster is rather thin and soft but suffices and feels smooth and pleasant to touch. I doubt that the DSO would survive a repeated fall to the ground ... which always could happen in harsh field service ... but then .... it´s a lowcost thingy.
The main trace display is surrounded by basic infos, like channel and trigger settings and is easy to read. It fills quickly though when additional infos like Meas etc. are activated.
But overall the display makes a really nice impression.
At the top side two BNC connectors protrude from the casing, sufficiently spaced apart to connect the probes without too much fiddling. A pair of quite decent looking probes, marked 6100 (100MHz?), 10x/1x switcheable are supplied also.
The bottom side features a 3.5mm video output connector and a small video cable 3.5mm to 3xRCA is included as accessory. It will be hard to find a monitor with such inputs nowadays ...appears a rather useless execution of a otherwise very useful feature. A modern interface like HDMI would be alot better.
Next to this there are two 2mm laboratory connectors, red and black, which form the output of the signal generator and allow for probe calibration. They come with two small rather flimsy matching cables with mini crocs at their ends. useably, bt no more.
Finally a USC-C Connector with associated USB-C-to-USB-A cable for charging the internal battery completes the connectivity.
Additional accessories contain several color-rings for probeidentification and a small srew driver/trimmer for calibration purposes.
The whole package is rounded up with a nice medium-hard protection pouch.
Not too bad for this little Gadget.
All this comes with a just under 100€ price tag. I bought it at a black-weeks sale for just over 60€, which makes it a even more attractive.
First contact revealed that some ´higher´ functions are not that intuitively to access. But a look into the short manual quickly solved all problems and the GUI appears quite logically programmed.
I was positively surprised about the fast booting time and how fast the DSO found a decent automatic setup.
Even a quite hard to trigger Trr measurement for a Diode went smooth and quick.
Zooming in on the trace and measuring/cursor we could evaluate the Trr time with good precision.
Big thumbs up for that!
I could also easily scope two of the three varying pulse trains of our Diffusion oven´s heating cassettes at the same ... which requires floating or isolated probe inputs. Just great.
More experiences will reveal more shines and flaws, but so far I´m really positvely surprised by the capabilities and working of the DSO2512G. certainly cheap for its retail price ... too cheap for what I paid. Lucky me again.
