Schon länger hatte ich mit dem Gedanken gespielt einen Lötofen anzuschaffen um auch SMD Platinen selbst problemlos in anständiger Qualität löten zu können. Der Preis eines professionellen Ofens lag jedoch weit über meinem Budget. Interessant waren Öfen chinesischer Herkunft, die teils sehr günstig auf ebay angeboten werden. Wie aber bei allen Dingen ist zu billig gekauft aber eben auch zweimal gekauft. Will heißen, daß diese Öfen ohne teils aufwändige Modifikationen nicht gut und vor allem sicher(!) zu betreiben sind ... und sich bis zum tauglichen, nutzbaren Zustand durchaus der Preis verdoppeln kann. Muss man ohnehin Hand anlegen, dann kommt alternativ weil noch günstiger auch ein Umbau eines Toasterofens mit einem Controller Bausatz wie dem Controleo in Betracht.
Die beste Alternative ist jedoch einen gebrauchten professionellen Ofen zu finden, der auch noch wenig kostet. Nun ja, Fortuna war mir wohl gesonnen und ließ mich bei ebay Kleinanzeigen solch ein Objekt finden. Sofort wurde der Verkäufer kontaktiert und ich bekam den Zuschlag.
Der RO250BF der Firma Paggen ist ein Konvektions Reflow Ofen für Prototypen und kleine Serien Fertigung bis zu 250x200mm Platinengröße und 300°C, also auch für bleifreie Lötungen. Aktuell ist er bei Paggen für ca. 4.500€ gelistet. Gegenüber den Infrarot-geheizten chinesischen Öfchen ist ein Konvektionsofen klar im Vorteil bezüglich der gleichmäßigen Erwärmung der Bauteile und wird nur noch von Dampfphasen-Öfen übertroffen.
Mein Ofen wurde 2008 hergestellt und befindet sich in sehr gutem Zustand. Ich denke er wird mir noch viele Jahre gute Dienste leisten.

The prices of new professional ovens were way above my budget though. Quite interesting were some ovens of chinese origin, which are offered on ebay at quite low cost. But as usual buying too cheap means buying twice. Meaning that these ovens are not safe(!) or well to work with without partly extensive modifications ... and until you manage to get them into a decent useable state the price easily doubles. Since one has to fudge anyway there comes an even cheaper alternative to mind, the tweaking of a toaster oven with an controller kit like the Controleo.
The best alternative still though is to find an used professional oven for a good price.

The RO250BF from Paggen is a convection reflow oven, intended for prototyping and small batches of PCBs of up to 200x250mm size and 300°C, hence also useable for lead-free soldering. Actually it is listed on Paggen´s website for ca. 4,500€. Against the infrared-heated chinese ovens it has the clear advantage of a more even heating of the devices. It is only surpassed by vapor-phase ovens.
My oven was built in 2008 and is in very good condition. I think it will serve me well for many more years.
